Extraorindary Thinker or Ordinary Thinker? – The Affirmation Spot for Friday May 16, 2012

We all have choices in life. One important choice is to decide if you are going to be an ordinary thinker or an extraordinary thinker. What’s the difference?

  1. Ordinary thinkers are fear-driven. Extraordinary thinkers are love-driven.
  2. Ordinary thinkers believe they are victims of fate. Extraordinary thinkers know they are choosers of destiny.
  3. Ordinary thinkers approve the status quo. Extraordinary thinkers improve the status quo.
  4. Ordinary thinkers strive to be cool. Extraordinary thinkers strive to be themselves.
  5. Ordinary thinkers are tenant farmers in the paradigms provided by others. Extraordinary thinkers are constantly planting new and exciting paradigms in their lives and in the world.
  6. Ordinary thinkers trust experts. Extraordinary thinkers listen to experts, but trust themselves.
  7. Faced with adversity, ordinary thinkers give up. Faced with adversity, extraordinary thinkers give more.
  8. Ordinary thinkers expect little and receive it. Extraordinary thinkers expect much and receive it.
  9. Ordinary thinkers employ labels. Extraordinary thinkers seek understanding.
  10. Ordinary thinkers believe in chances. Extraordinary thinkers believe in choices.
  11. Ordinary thinkers think life happens to them. Extraordinary thinkers know life happens through them.
  12. Ordinary thinkers allow their doubts to rule them. Extraordinary thinkers allow their dreams to rule them.
  13. Ordinary thinkers believe one setback can stop everything. Extraordinary thinkers know one great idea can change everything.
  14. Ordinary thinkers conceive the world as “Us” vs. “Them”. Extraordinary thinkers see only we.
  15. Ordinary thinkers are comforted by easy answers. Extraordinary thinkers dare hard questions.
  16. Ordinary thinkers conform to the tribe. Extraordinary thinkers transform the tribe.

Let us all commit to extraordinary thinking today. Ordinary thinkers become extraordinary thinkers every day. Why not you? The hero you’re waiting for is waiting for you in the mirror.

George Gurdjieff on Freedom and Self Development

Here is a quote from George Gurdjieff talking about the importance, significance, and urgency with which must address our self-development. The final line is very reminiscent of the Buddha’s aphorism that, “The problem is that you think you have time.”

He also astutely reminds us that freedom is the the best environment to pursue our goals of self-awareness. How true.

“We must strive for freedom if we strive for self-knowledge. The task of self-knowledge and of further self-development is of such importance and seriousness, it demands such intensity of effort, that to attempt it any old way and amongst other things is impossible. The person who undertakes this task must put it first in his life, which is not so long that he can afford to squander it on trifles.”

The Hero Within – The Affirmation Spot for Monday September 6, 2010

Today’s Affirmation:

When I feel helpless I remember I AM powerful. When I feel weak I remember I AM strong!

Happy Monday!

Some may see it as cliche to talk in terms of the hero within. After all, we have a tendency to overuse words and dilute their meaning. However, I really want you to embrace this idea that hero lives within you. Every person reading this is disguised all day like Clark Kent just waiting for your phone booth moment to arrive.

We are inundated by the idea that soldiers, firefighters, and police officers are heroes. No question, they are heroes. Yet, I would argue that the seeds of heroism lie within each of us. The single parent raising several successful children is hero. The person who works for peace daily is a hero. The person who shares a kind word with someone who needs it is a hero too.

Here are eight characteristics of a hero to help you see the moments in your life when you are one.

  1. The hero’s work may be great or small. It does not always change the world. Sometimes it just changes the moment.
  2. The hero’s work is everywhere he or she goes all day long. The hero is always looking for those phone booth moments to step forward and shine.
  3. The hero may deserve or even get the credit, but the hero does what he or she does because it contributes not for the credit.
  4. The hero puts the good of the team ahead of his or her own good.
  5. The hero sees beyond appearances and gets to what is real and true; choosing to live there.
  6. The hero knows his or her work is bigger than self.
  7. The hero knows that criticism and blame comes with the territory and is careful never to associate himself or herself with either.
  8. You are a hero. Plain and simple, you are. Let that part of you come to the surface at every opportunity.

Follow your bliss! Experience your bliss! Become your bliss!

Collective Mental Empowerment Parts I & II – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday February 10, 2010

Last summer I posted a two-part series on the importance of mental empowerment. The first article discussed all the ways the mental environment is polluted with negativity and fear. The second article discussed ways to deal with it and overcome it.

They caused quite a response when I posted them originally. Thought I’d post them again.

2010 Affirmation

“2010 is MY year! This is the year I break free! This is the year I break through! This is the year I break out!”

Empowerment Affirmations – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday February 3, 2010

Today’s Thought:

“Freedom begins the moment you realize someone else has been writing your story and it’s time you took the pen from his hand and started writing it yourself.”
~ Bill Moyers

Empowerment. It’s a big word and it’s used often in our modern society. But what does it really mean? If you look at the dictionary definitions, they say it’s about permitting or enabling action.

I like to take words and break them down for their meaning. If you look at the word you see em-power-ment.

The prefix em means “to place into”. We all know what power means. The suffix ment means action.

So, we are left with a definition for empowerment that reads, “the act of putting power within.”

When you empower yourself you are literally placing the power within you to think, act, and decide for yourself. Empowerment is one of those things that starts in your body and sweeps its way up to your mind and your lips.

Here are some affirmations and thoughts to empower your day.

  1. I empower myself to think for myself!
  2. I am an empowered thinker! As I empower my thinking, I empower the thinking of those around me!
  3. I am an empowered human being who thinks for myself and lets wisdom rather than fear rule!
  4. Empowerment – self or global – is not a spectator sport.
  5. I am a magnificent being of power and light!
  6. Love is the light, freedom the path, empowerment the goal.
  7. Empowerment and positive thinking are definitely not about “drinking the kool-aid” they are about making your own lemonade.
  8. Today my mind transcends either/or thinking and explores new possibilities!
  9. I embrace the power and beauty within me and water it every day!
  10. Today I empower myself to think outside boxes and push my paradigms!
  11. Thinking for myself is my gateway to freedom. Today I think more freely than ever!
  12. Today I unleash the power of empowered thinking in my life!
  13. Empowered thinkers know they are capable of acting on their success, happiness, and betterment; and helping others do the same.
  14. Empowered thinkers know that humanity’s best days are coming, but some changes must come first.
  15. Empowered thinkers aren’t those who believe world is all rosy, they are those who believe we are capable of making it so.
  16. Today and every day, I am a beacon of hope and empowerment for the people around me!

Follow your bliss! Experience your bliss! Become your bliss!

Are We Conscious Enough to Change? – The Affirmation Spot for Saturday January 30, 2010

Thought for Today:

We unconsciously become the experience of previous generations, unless we consciously become the change.

Most people in our modern world are aware that their DNA – the building blocks of our bodies – are passed on to us by our parents.

Attitudes and thought patterns are passed along in much the same way. Early on, our parents have the strongest influence and later our peer groups. Then, of course, we are all impacted by societal mental soup in which we swim. Few would argue that our own personality is in there somewhere impacting the person we become. However, we unconsciously accept and create models of the world based on how those around us see it.

The end product is often a human being holding strongly to beliefs he or she had almost no role in creating. Yet, our connection to those beliefs – that model of the world – are so strong many are willing to kill and die for them.

The question is sometimes asked, “If humans were capable of changing wouldn’t we have already changed?” The assumption in that question is that we cannot change because we have not changed.

Ethnic and religious wars spring up in our world over the simple right of the other to exist. Humans have and continue to enslave humans. Military, political, and economic empires are built on the sweat and tears of people we never see.

Can we change? Well, my answer is yes and no. If our plan is to unconsciously continue inheriting, then no we cannot and we will not change. On the other hand, if we choose become consciously aware of this habitual “mental DNA”, we most certainly can see an end to the unconsciousness.

Without artificial interference, there is little we can do with the physical genes we get other than make the most of them. Fortunately, our mental genes can easily be changed by us whenever we choose.
