In our modern world, the piano is a mainstay instrument common most types of western music. However, the modern piano has only been with us for about 300 years. The Italian Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731) is generally considered the inventor of the piano.

The piano was based on earlier instruments like the harpsichord (which was loud enough for concert play, but lacked the expressive control sought by composers and players) and the clavichord (which offered expressive control, but lacked sufficient loudness).

The instrument remained largely unknown until an Italian writer Scipione Maffei wrote a widely circulated article about the new instrument that included a diagram. That article inspired a generation of piano builders.

Today the instrument is a vehicle of expression for composers and players and a means of inspiration to billions of listeners.

The following affirmations are written for those intrepid pianists at all levels seeking to bring their brand of beauty into our world. I have used piano player and pianist interchangeably. Use the one that works best for you.

I wrote this poem in 1993, as one way of seeing that reality.

It expresses the sense of wholeness, devoid of our individual personalities, that underlies the nature of our existence.

It’s a bit existential with some Buddhist overtones. I hope you enjoy and that it makes you think.

“Ultimate Reality”

Cling not to what is fleeting
All is fleeting, therefore, cling not.
Matter and energy, time and space
Are but reflections in the void.

Desire nothing and everything shall you attain
Have everything and, in truth, nothing is yours.
For no holder is there and nothing held;
And nothing to hold, only unity.

I am but a process in gentle progress; simply
Inter-connected energy flowing in a manner
Created by what has come to pass,
Its interaction bringing forth the future.

No self may be found behind the process,
Only a conscious part of a greater whole
Moving back and forth as far as may be seen
Yet, verily, never having moved at all.

As you look at that quote, which one fits you? If you’re in the first group, please keep that momentum flowing in your life and the world as you impact it in 2012. If you’re in the latter group, a new year is a new start. It’s a chance to ask whether that way of seeing the world is getting you where you want to go in life.

2012 promises to be an intriguing year. There have been a lot of seeds planted in the mass consciousness about this year. Even if nothing historic or catastrophic happens, we are going to have to diffuse all the psychological baggage that accompanies the coming of this year. For what many still don’t realize, is that are our minds (individually and collectively) are not separate from the world “out there”. Our thoughts are, in fact, the root system of the “tree” we see manifested as the “real” world around us. If you dig up a tree, you will find it all stems from its root system. If you dig up our world of events and experiences, you soon see it is made up of our thoughts.

The cross-currents of disempowerment will be many and vocal in this historic year. The pace of change – real and perceived – is going to pick up during this year because of the built up psychological expectations for it. That makes it more important than ever to empower your mind and think the thoughts and envision the world you desire.

I am posting New Year’s Affirmations a little early so that you can begin using them now to get your new year off to a great start. Here are 23 affirmations to get your new year off to an empowering start.

I recommend you begin the year with using either “this year” or “In 2012,” and as you get beyond the change of the year change it to “Today” or “Right now”.

1. This year I AM the person I came to the planet to be!

Without goals and dreams, we quickly become victims of the status quo. We often use goals and dreams interchangeably. For me, the distinction is that a dream is the big vision and goals are the milestones that build the dream. Dreams are summit of the mountain and goals are the footholds along the way.

It is my belief that we can be, do, or have anything we want in life, if we are committed enough to believe and take action.

Accomplishing goals and dreams requires clarity of purpose (Napoleon Hill called this a burning desire), focus, and perseverance. There are few things in life more in the wheelhouse for affirmations.

What is your vision and what your steps, commitments, and milestones to get there? These affirmations are written to support you in that quest. There are a few that are similar to help you find the one with the right wording for you.

“All that we are, is the result of what we have thought.”

Siddartha Gautama, the man known to history as The Buddha, was born in Northern India (modern-day Nepal) in 563 B.C.E. He was a prince and the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya. The Buddha=to-be grew up in a world of privilege and seclusion from the suffering of the world.

This was ordered and ensured by his father after the prophets in his court told him that his son would either be a great king who would rule the world or a great world-savior. The prophet informed the king that his son would be the latter, if he was exposed to human suffering. The king did all in his power to prevent his son from exposure to anything that would interfere with his son becoming a great ruler.

While in his late 20s, Siddartha witnesses an old person, illness, and death for the first time in his life. He is greatly dismayed, realizing that he too was subject to these forces. Then he encounters a holy man and he immediately understands that if these terrible things exist in the world, there must be a way to overcome them. He decides to leave his princely life in search of a way to overcome these human difficulties.

After studying under a variety of teachers, Siddhartha attained enlightenment at the age of 35. He planted himself beneath a Bodhi Tree and vowed not to rise from the spot until he had discovered the ultimate truth.

The rest is history, as they say. 2500 years later 376 million human beings adhere to the Buddha’s Middle Way and Eightfold Path; making Buddhism the 4th largest “religion” in the world. However, if you include “cultural Buddhists” there are probably more Buddhists than any other religion on the planet. The Buddha himself is revered as a shining example of human potential, determination, and possibility. His practices and teachings are the basis for many relaxation, visualization, and self-improvement techniques.

Here are some affirmations for Buddhists and those interested in adopting a Buddhist approach in their life and thinking.

1. Today I am happy. Today I am peaceful. Today I am free from suffering!
2. Today and every  day, I am committed to my meditation practice.
3. I practice Metta everywhere I go and in everything I do!
4. Today my inner lotus blossoms, as I release attachments and turn my face to the sun.

With the possible exception of becoming a professional athlete, there is no bigger dream in western culture than becoming a movie star.
