It’s hard to believe the new year is here. It’s also hard to believe this is the third New Year’s Eve since I began this blog two and half years ago.

For those of you who have been following along for a while, you know that the past two years I have posted an official affirmation for the coming year. In 2009, I also used the affirmation as a close to each post.

Today I am unveiling my official affirmation for 2010. I hope you will find it useful and meaningful and something you can affirm throughout the coming year.

Here are the previous two annual affirmations.

2008 Affirmation

“Who I am is not for sale at any price! I am brilliant and beautiful and a best friend to everyone who knows me. I am peaceful and happy and more successful than ever before. I am relaxed and confident and trading in my old fears on new hopes.
2008 is going to be a wonderful year for me; a year of breakthrough, options, and opportunities for new paths to follow. I am excited and ready for the challenges and the triumphs that lie ahead.
No, my self-worth, my happiness, my freedom, my unbounded optimism about what is ahead is not for sale at any price!”

2009 Affirmation

“This year I am absolutely committed to being the person I came here to be!”

2010 Affirmation

“2010 is my year! This is the year I break free. This is the year I break through! This is the year I break out!”

Breaking it down:

  • This is the year I break free – May this be the year you break free from the status quo and the inertia from your past that has been holding you back.
  • This is the year I break through – May this be the year that you push forward through the obstacles and the excuses towards the life you dream of living.
  • This is the year I break out – Once you’ve broken free and broken through, may 2010 be the year when everything breaks loose for you. We all had a wonderful example of this in 2009. Susan Boyle – the 48 year old Scottish singer – went from obscurity to international stardom practically overnight because she put herself out there and gave herself a chance.

I know 2010 can be a big year for all of us – individually and globally. Make it the year that you “break” with the past and step into your future!

Stay inspired!

Time to Be Who You Came Here to Be – The Affirmation Spot for Friday January 2, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“This year I am absolutely committed to being the person I came here to be.”
(This is the official TAS affirmation for 2009. Click the affirmation to hear the mp3 version)

starfield2Unless you adhere to the most skeptical view of evolution, you probably believe that life has a purpose. There is a reason you – and everyone and everything that shares this planet with you – are here. Your very presence is a certifiable miracle.

Literally trillions of events in the history of this universe had to happen just right for you to be here. If any one of them had happened another way, then no you.

In my book, that makes your existence rather significant.

That begs the question. Why are you here? What are you here to be?

More than likely you know the answer to that question. It’s hidden or forgotten somewhere deep inside of you, but it is there. You’ve had inklings of it throughout your life. There are those things you just love doing and experiencing. There are places you just love to be. Perhaps at one time you dreamed of doing those things or being in those places.

Somewhere along the line your dreams and reality collided.  You gave up on the dreams to live in “reality.” “They” told you your dreams were not realistic and you bought it. My question to you is do your dreams and your reality have to be conflict? Can your dreams become your reality?

The great thinkers and spiritual teachers of our species have been clear and unequivocal in their conviction that our dreams can be our reality. Few things have been more universally taught.

That’s not to say that you can blink your eyes “Genie-style” and your wish becomes your life. It may take work. There may be challenges. You might have to make hard choices. None of the great sages ever promised otherwise.

Are your dreams worth it or not?

The joy and jubilation created by the new year will pass and “real life” will begin again. The momentum you need to make the changes you are promising yourself this year need to be boosted by something inspirational, if they are to survive.

Your dreams fit the bill perfectly. Suspend your disbelief and start walking in the direction of your dreams. As you get in better “dream shape” pick it up to a jog. By the end of the journey, you will be in full sprint towards your dreams.

Soon you will be embracing your deepest dreams and spending your days living your dreams instead of…well…dreaming about them. Belief and commitment are the only price of admission.

It’s time to “show up” and be the people we came here to be in 2009! Are you with me?

Stay awesome!

New Year’s Day 2009 – The Affirmation Spot for January 1, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“I constantly look for new ways to use creativity to enhance my work.”
(click the affirmation to hear it in mp3)

fireworks1As 2009 begins, 2008 and all its memories slip into the past. There they join memories from other years. It’s easy to allow our present to become a place where we long for the past. The past always seems somehow noble and safe from a distance. As long as we don’t live in the past, there is no harm in remembering it.

The past, though, has a lesson for the present. All those fond memories were once a “right now”. Did we enjoy them to their fullest when we were there? We remember them fondly now, but did we truly and fully experience their miracle then?

2009 is now full of potential and memories to be created. As we create them, let us pledge to live each one to its fullest and experience it to the max.

So what does 2009 promise? The words that come to mind are Transformation and Renaissance. There are some very hopeful and inspiring possibilities on the horizon.

Global – This year, I believe, has the potential for a Renaissance on so many fronts. It’s becoming apparent – as we’ve seen in recent months – that many of the ways we think about, see, and interact with the world no longer serve us.

Transformation is in the air as outmoded institutions and systems struggle to survive.  Renaissance is happening, but we must ensure it is the kind of Renaissance that leads to a freer, more enlightened humanity.

Bottom-up empowerment must win out against Top-down control. Centralized authority and control – be it governmental, economic, military, spiritual, or corporate – are the problem not the solution. These systems stifle the creativity and collaboration needed to advance.

However, these systems are going to try to hold on to power with white-knuckled determination. Their power and control are what they know and what they are comfortable with. In my opinion, it is not global recession we are witnessing, but global transformation.

That new posidigm is coming into view, but the existing negadigm is going to drag its feet. Wisdom and empowered thinking will be at a premium, but they will see us through.

Personal – Changes in the global system necessitate change within us. As we seek to grasp new models for universal advancement, we also have inner work that we know needs to happen.

Resolutions are great, but if you’re bold enough this year; replace your resolutions with revolutions. Your life can be transformed by this time next year, if you choose. You are the deciding factor.

There is no throwing the baby out with the bathwater here. What still works for the world and for us will remain. We are simply going to see a shedding of old paradigms created for another era. 2009 seems poised to be a pivotal year in this shift.

We are, indeed, living in interesting times.

Stay awesome!

Your 2009 ‘To Be List’ – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday December 31, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

“I absorb knowledge like a sponge and retain it for use at the appropriate time.”
(click the affirmation to hear it in mp3)

todolistOur society is built on getting things done. Productive action is an important ingredient to our success. The “To-Do List” is a staple of our productivity society.

We make these lists to remind us of the tasks we need to complete in a day, a week, or some other time period. Some people use them as a guide, while others meticulously check off each task as it is completed.

The super-organized among us are probably already creating their 2009 To-Do Lists. Nearly all of us are thinking about the things we “have to get done” next year.

Numerous motivational speakers and spiritual teachers have commented that we are human “beings” not human “doings”. This is commentary on our propensity to focus on the doing at the expense of the being.

Their goal is to remind us that we are here as surely TO BE as we are to do. They are suggesting an imbalance in our lives between doing and being. With our fast-paced, modern, rush, rush, rush society; who can argue?

The extreme answer to reducing your “doingness” is to sell your possessions and go live as a monk on a mountain top somewhere. You could then spend your entire life just being. That’s not a realistic or even appealing option for most of us.

So, how do you find a beingness/doingness balance in your life? How do you keep yourself reminded to “just be” or to become who you want TO BE?

Create a To-Be List for 2009. I know, I know, I see the paradox in suggesting a doing to improve your ability to be. Life is full of paradoxes.

Your To-Be List has two aspects:

  1. Planned Beingness - these times can go right on your calendar along with your to-dos. They are planned times in your day or week where you plan to just be. Just being can mean meditating, sitting quietly, or brainstorming…you get to define what it means for you. There are just two rules. This time must be time away from your To-Do List activites. You’re not doing any of them or thinking about them. PLANNED BEINGNESS IS YOU TIME. Place this in your daily To-Do List or on your calendar. Plan your beingness.
  2. Visionary Beingness – answers the question, “Who do I want TO BE a year from now?” A To-Do List enumerates the tasks you want to get done in 2009. Your To-Be List can enumerate the characteristics you want TO BE you at the end of 2009. These can be self-development goals, career goals, or personal characteristics. This is your list of things TO BE by the end of 2009. It’s an organized way to spell out who you want TO BE the same way you list what you need to do. Examples include the following.
    • By the end of 2009, I will BE less judgmental than I am now.
    • By the end of 2009, I will BE more courageous in following my dreams than I am now.
    • By the end of 2009, I will BE in a managerial role.
    • By the end of 2009, I will BE more at peace than I am today.
    • By the end of 2009, I will BE a more accomplished writer.
    • By the end of 2009, I will BE a more effective business owner.

Tips for Success:

  • Make your To-Be List as important as your To-Do List.
  • Use existing tools like your current electronic calendar or hard copy planner to create your To-Be List right along side your To-Do List.
  • Make it part of your routine.
  • Spend time each day reviewing your To-Be List just as you do your To-Do List.

By making time TO BE, you will experience greater peace and contentment. By envisioning who you want TO BE, you are focusing your mind and your efforts to create the circumstances, opportunities, and intention to make it so. Create an expectation that you will complete your T0-Be List the same way you complete your To-Do List and you will!

Let me take this opportunity to wish every reader a Happy New Year. I know your time is valuable and I am really working to bring you the best blog possible – one that adds real value to your life each day. Your readership makes it all worth it.

Please let me know what I can do to make it more empowering, thought-provoking, or meaningful for you. I do read every comment and email. If this blog is adding value to your life, please tell at least one friend about it in 2009! Thank you for your support.

By the end of 2009, I will BE a more effective blogger!

Stay inspired!
